Join me for more conversations with Milton

The opening of the exhibition at Milton’s Cottage went well, and it was wonderful to meet so many Milton scholars all in one place. It’s such an honour to be invited to show my work in the very place where Milton wrote Paradise Lost. In many ways, the synergy between the environment and my work was quite overwhelming. There seemed to be a tangible electricity and fizz in these rooms.

350 years since the death of Milton

Paradise Lost is as fresh and relevant as ever. I think this is because of the universal themes of creation, destruction, temptation, love and loss. I hope my drawings offer a new way to navigate Milton’s poetry for contemporary audiences.

This body of work, A Conversation with Paradise Regain’d and Samson Agonistes, is displayed throughout the historic rooms of Milton’s only surviving residence, alongside a first edition of Milton’s final poems. This cottage is where Milton spoke out the words for his epic masterpiece and got inspired to write Paradise Regain’d. For me, this makes Milton’s Cottage the ultimate place to show – it feels so right and at home.

Photographs that capture the spirit of the place

Thanks to Benjamin Rhodes and Justin Piperger, we now have a permanent record of the exhibition. He really has captured the spirit of this beautiful time warp. This photo taken in Milton’s study is one of my favourite photographs because Milton’s bust is reflected in the glass of the drawing, just above the unique collection of first editions.

Announcing my talks

On Wednesday 24th July, I’ll be back at the cottage to give two talks, at 4pm and 7.30pm. You will need to book your place because the cottage is so small.

Meet me at Milton’s Cottage

I will be at the cottage all day on 24th July, available to talk and give personal, private tours for anyone interested.

Huge thanks

I’m so thankful to Kelly O’Reilly, the Director of the Cottage, and my dealer, Benjamin Rhodes, for making this happen and for all their support. Also, huge thanks to Arts University Plymouth for releasing me for this valuable research, enabling me to share my knowledge and creativity.

A Conversation with Paradise Regain’d & Samson Agonistes continues

These drawings were completed after my 10-year conversation with Milton’s Paradise Lost. This exhibition will continue until 8th September 2-5pm, Wednesday to Sunday.

How to find Milton’s Cottage

Milton’s Cottage is a hidden gem and makes a lovely day out. You will find directions here. Address: 21 Deanway, Chalfont St Giles, Buckinghamshire, HP8 4JH

Here are my first two drawings of Paradise Regained. It’s so beautiful to see the reflection of the bust of Milton floating over the left-hand drawing, Modes of Apprehension. Underneath is the collection of many editions of Milton’s poetry, including first editions.
